My partner and I, aresearching for sixteen worthy and adventurous teachers who would like to test pilot a new website, NOMBI. The site contains an activity center for students and teachers. It is so simple to operate that even if you are not smarter than a 5th grader, NOMBI will give the illusion that you are.

The site is so flexible that it can be used in class or after school hours.
All the tools are free. All we ask is that you use the site as much as possible so we can debug any glitches.

Taking this course with Professor Colllins has again piqued my interest in keeping up writing my blog. This is my first year teaching ninth grade mathematics at Information Technology High School. Prior to that, I taught 7th and 8th grade mathematics in a middle school for 7 years. Even though it is a technology high school, I am the only major subject teacher using computers in my classroom on a daily basis. I was hired specifically to teach students' mathematics and incorporate technology into my lesson plans. I use my website http://www.nombi.com/ as a home base so to speak.
This has been my first endeavor in trying to incorporate technology with mathematics.
I have a mixed bag of students in each class. I can't begin to describe how culturally diverse each class is, but I will say that at least five distinct languages can be heard at one time or another. Of course everyone speaks for the most part fluent English. Reading and translating mathematical word problems are an entirely different issue.

As you can see, this is a mixed bag, but the overriding factor in all this is the lack of ability

I am trying to create a combination of "in house class" and online class. This is my first attempt at it and I am flying by the seat of my pants. Many of my students' which are predominately freshman and a smattering of sophomores have not been exposed to learning mathematics via the Internet. Some seem excited, some skeptical, but all need help in how to use a discussion board, search the Internet and use a Wikispace. Spelling and punctuation on the discussion board is emphasized. Students are advised to use the spell check at the bottom of the page before posting on the board. Two weeks into the semester, but this being the third week, is a full week and hopefully most of the administrative tasks of assigning numbers and codes is almost complete. This week will be the first of truly testing the online operations in place.
